Student Energy's Impact in 2020

Year in Review

In 2020, we had to adapt our programs in a big way. Building on our history of delivering impactful virtual programming while building a global community, we were well-positioned to continue to serve young people when we experienced disruptions to our normal ways of working, and we achieved some notable milestones:

  • Even as universities shifted to teaching online, we were able to grow our network to 47 chapters in 22 countries, who engaged over 16,000 youth.
  • We launched the first Leaders Fellowship cohort in January and ended the year with 47 global teams completing their 10-month online program.
  • The Regional Coordinators of our Global Youth Outlook are working hard to reach 50,000 young people for input in the research process in the lead-up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).
  • Our Energy System Map and video users skyrocketed this year, reaching a lifetime total of 10 million+ users, with 2.5 million of those just in 2020, as more students and educators turned to digital energy learning resources. This year, we launched the new Energy System Map, featuring the new “Influences” layer, to help young people understand how to change the energy system
  • We provided $120,000 in funding directly to young people to support them with honorariums and awards to help them take action on energy and are working on an even more ambitious direct-to-youth funding strategy for 2021.

Leaders Fellowship

We developed the Leaders Fellowship as a way to streamline energy education and capacity-building for our Chapters, and the program has quickly grown into one of the most in-demand program offerings at Student Energy. The inaugural Leaders Fellowship cohort of 50 global youth teams successfully completed their 10-month program in October 2020, launching 47 youth-led energy solutions. We received nearly 600 applications from 75 countries for the second cohort and have now recruited a total of 90 teams to participate in the second year of the Leaders Fellowship in 2021.

Program 1

In 2019, the Chapters program grew from 19 to 41 chapters worldwide, who collectively engaged over 8,100 people through their projects. The Chapters program continues to be Student Energy’s most in-demand program, with over a hundred new expressions of interest still on a waitlist.

Program 3

In 2019, the Chapters program grew from 19 to 41 chapters worldwide, who collectively engaged over 8,100 people through their projects. The Chapters program continues to be Student Energy’s most in-demand program, with over a hundred new expressions of interest still on a waitlist.

Global Youth Energy Outlook

The Global Youth Energy Outlook is the first report of its kind that will outline what young around the world want to see for the future of energy in their region, and how they want to work to change the energy system. In 2020, we launched the year long research project by recruiting a team of 12 youth Regional Coordinators, who are each engaging young people in their region. The final report is expected to launch at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021. Throughout the end of 2020 and into 2021, the Global Youth Energy Outlook team will be conducting outreach through the Global Youth Energy Outlook Questionnaire available in 10 languages:

Program 5

In 2019, the Chapters program grew from 19 to 41 chapters worldwide, who collectively engaged over 8,100 people through their projects. The Chapters program continues to be Student Energy’s most in-demand program, with over a hundred new expressions of interest still on a waitlist.

Program 4

In 2019, the Chapters program grew from 19 to 41 chapters worldwide, who collectively engaged over 8,100 people through their projects. The Chapters program continues to be Student Energy’s most in-demand program, with over a hundred new expressions of interest still on a waitlist.

Program 6

In 2019, the Chapters program grew from 19 to 41 chapters worldwide, who collectively engaged over 8,100 people through their projects. The Chapters program continues to be Student Energy’s most in-demand program, with over a hundred new expressions of interest still on a waitlist.

Looking Ahead

In February 2020 Student Energy will begin the research phase of the first Global Youth Energy Outlook. Working with ten regional youth coordinators around the world, Student Energy will gather the perceptions of young people on the world’s next ten years of the energy transition. Central to this research will be youth -defined priorities for action in policy, investment, technology and social systems change, highlighting young people’s inherent ability to think critically and holistically about energy challenges.
