Student Energy’s Board of Directors is recruiting new Directors

Student Energy is seeking Directors to join its Board. The Board of Directors serves as Student Energy’s legal governance body and is responsible for the adoption of bylaws and policies, oversight of Student Energy’s Executive Director, providing strategic guidance to support the organization’s current and future goals, the stewardship of long-term financial health of the organization and the advancement the organization’s mission and Theory of Change.

Commitment: The Board meets 6-8 times per year by video conference, and Directors serve on individual committees to advance the work of the Board. The approximate time commitment is 5-7 hours/month. Terms of appointed Directors are two (2) years in length, with the possibility of extension depending on the needs of the Board. The Board also meets face to face once a year, with basic expenses covered by the organization.

Student Energy is seeking applicants interested in serving on at least one of the following committees:

  • Finance & Audit 
  • Fund Development
  • Board Nominating and Development
  • HR & Compensation
  • Communications

Experience with the nonprofit sector – and knowledge and expertise in global climate and energy issues –  is preferred. Directors provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director and staff, protect the organization, and help establish new partnerships and funding sources. They serve as brand ambassadors and help scale Student Energy’s reach, network and impact. 

In addition, the Board is looking for Directors with specific expertise in Accounting and/or Audit. The Board is seeking a Treasurer to oversee the Finance and Audit Committee, including working with Student Energy’s staff to implement strong financial controls and processes, oversee the annual Audit, and monitor the financial situation of the organization. Experience in not-for-profit or charitable accounting in Canada is highly desired.

While Directors sit on the Board they cannot participate in Student Energy programs, but they may return to programs after their term.
