Guided Project

JOMO KENYATTA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY (JKUAT)

OVERVIEW

We are a team of students taking part in the Student Energy Guided Projects program. SE Guided Projects provides post-secondary students with the training, mentorship and funding needed to develop clean energy projects in their communities. Through this program, our team is seeking to develop a solar energy project at Gachororo Primary School and is seeking support to make the aforementioned project successful. Reach us at segpjkuat@studentenergy.org

TEAM

The team is comprised of renewable energy students from all over Kenya brought together by their passion for sustainable energy and environmental conservation. However, as much as the course is offered in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, there is a large skill gap in the program. Thus, the team took the opportunity to build and enhance their skills by taking part in Student Energy Guided Project program aimed at installing solar photovoltaics systems. The team also chose Gachororo Primary School as the project host due to the lack of reliable and adequate lighting in the school from the power regulating company , Kenya Power. The team is also expounding on the project as their research project.

TIMELINE

PROJECT RATIONALE

SE-JKUAT is a strong supporter of renewable sources of energy. Electrifying Gachororo Primary School using solar PV is the best option because solar energy is free and largely available in sub-saharan Africa. The technology also leaves a small carbon footprint. This puts the team on the right path to solving excess global warming that leads to excess climate change. Electrifying Gachororo Primary provides opportunities to the pupils to increase their study time. They will also be able to take part in the Competency Based Curriculum with much more ease because they will be able to use the electronics without worrying about their batteries running out. The pupils may also be inspired to pursue solar PV and other renewable energy projects in their future.

The project team members will hence be equipped with skills pertaining to project management as well as technical skills in installing solar PVs and their management. The project will serve as an internship preparing them for the job market.

HOW YOU CAN HELP?

This project involves a lot of phases for it to be complete i.e site assessment, electrical contracting, fundraising, labour, and community inclusivity. Should you be interested in knowing more about our project, and you can support us in any way please send us an email at segp-jkuat@studentenergy.org or call our team lead at +254716898611-Ambrose Albert.
