Where in the world?

Overview

Joel Aboderin’s journey into decarbonization was sparked by early experiences witnessing environmental degradation during visits to Nigeria. The stark realities of oil pollution and gas flaring motivated Joel to seek ways to contribute positively to his community. After being accepted into an Erasmus Mundus Master’s Degree in Management and Engineering of Environment and Energy in 2021, Joel recognized the need for a more comprehensive understanding of green project finance.

The Student Energy Career Training (SECT) Program provided this crucial insight, offering an accelerated grasp of green project finance. Working with Celium, a climate venture studio, Joel and his team analyzed green energy companies from an investor’s perspective, producing a detailed report on their valuations.

The skills acquired through SECT proved invaluable in his master’s project designing a Mobile EV Charger for Budapest, Hungary, addressing range anxiety and charging delays. Their SECT experience also contributed to his acceptance into the 2022 Blue Integrated Partnerships summer institute program at Purdue University, where he presented research on wind turbine performance. Joel has since been awarded a fully funded PhD at Purdue University's Department of Mechanical Engineering to research Reverse Osmosis and Desalination Technologies.

"I am very grateful for the Student Energy Career Training opportunity as it has contributed significantly to my continuing career in decarbonization."
