Guided Project
Western University
Our project aims to design and implement a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system that will provide electricity to charging ports in a communal seating area at the St. Thomas YMCA.
Project Overview
Our project aims to design and implement a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system that will provide electricity to charging ports in a communal seating area at the St. Thomas YMCA. Through this, we hope to achieve and foster a stronger sense of community and allow for a more lively and vibrant space in the recreation centre.

Project Rationale
There are many benefits to this project; ranging from clean energy efficiencies to social and educational aspects. The solar powered outlets would allow the users of the facility to be brought together and learn about the advantages and diverse uses of sustainable energy. Building a project that consists of charging outlets rather than traditional uses of solar energy, such as lighting fixtures, will be educational and showcase the ability of solar energy to be incorporated into other aspects of everyday energy use. The YMCA is a vibrant and wide-spread organization with the goal of becoming more sustainable year by year, thus sharing a common mission with the Western University student team. This project will provide the team members with valuable insight into the clean energy industry and equip them with hands-on experience in project management, collaborative work, and communication with external stakeholders. Lastly, this project will reduce the electricity consumption from the grid of the YMCA and power and revamp an old community room into an energetic place for users to gather.

Project Budget
We currently are unable to provide a specific budget for this project, as we are still in the process of contacting contractors and sizing the array. However, we do not expect to exceed the $15,000 budget to be provided. If our budget exceeds this, we will seek funding externally from fundraising efforts on behalf of the team.
Support Opportunities
This project involves a lot of phases for it to be complete (i.e. site assessment, electrical contracting, fundraising, labour, and community inclusivity). We are always looking for support in terms of funding, industry guidance and following along our journey on social media. Should you be interested in knowing more about our project or to support us in any way please send an email to our team email or to the team lead.
