Overview
We work with a network of 50,000 young people from over 120 countries to build the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to take action on energy. Student Energy’s core programs include a network of 56+ global post-secondary Chapters, a digital Energy System Map that has reached 3 million users, and the International Student Energy Summit, the largest student-led energy conference in the world. We also work with governments, companies, and organizations to facilitate meaningful youth engagement and mobilize resources to support youth-led energy solutions, in a program we call Space for Youth.
We operate on a unique youth empowerment model, which means that our initiatives are co-created with young people, for young people. We have consistently found that when young people are empowered to take action on energy and have access to decision-making spaces, they are able to raise the level of ambition in that space.
Our History
Student Energy started with a spark. Three driven students, passionate about energy, found that young people like themselves had no space to engage directly with the decision-makers and influential leaders who were determining their energy future. It took just one ambitious idea: an international conference where young people set the agenda, led the discussions, and asked the questions, bringing together hundreds of youth passionate about energy and some of the world’s most influential energy leaders. Since this first International Student Energy Summit took place in 2009, Student Energy has expanded into a global organization.
Our co-founders Janice Tran, Kali Taylor, and Sean Collins take you through the history of how Student Energy became a global organization, starting from the first International Student Energy Summit in Calgary in 2009 to where we are today.
Student Energy has now expanded its programming to offer a groundbreaking digital Energy System Map that has reached over 3 million visitors, empowered thousands of youth through post-secondary level Student Energy Chapters, and hosted six youth-led international Summits. The International Student Energy Summit is now the largest forum in the world for students on energy, and in 2019, we held our largest Summit yet, bringing together 650 students from over 100 countries, more than double our numbers from year one.
This growing movement of students is Student Energy’s greatest success story, with over 50,000 students from over 120 countries engaged in our educational programs. Our alumni have gone on to develop and implement renewable energy technologies, run for political office, advise the United Nations, and work with the largest energy companies on the planet to push for a clean energy future.
