Solar energy comes with its own vocabulary. Here’s what you need to know to make sense of the numbers above.

kW kilowatt |
| A measure of power — how much electricity a system can produce at any given moment. Think of it like the maximum speed of a car. A 5 kW solar array can power roughly 3–5 average homes simultaneously on a sunny day. |

kWh kilowatt-hour |
| A measure of energy — how much electricity is actually produced over time. One kWh is what you get from running a 1 kW system for one hour. Your home electricity bill is measured in kWh. It’s the difference between speed (kW) and distance travelled (kWh). |

kWp kilowatt-peak |
| The maximum power a solar panel can produce under ideal lab conditions (full sun, perfect temperature). Real-world output is usually lower due to clouds, angle, and heat. It’s the “rated” capacity stamped on the panel. |

Specific PV output kWh/kWp |
| How much energy one kilowatt of solar panels produces in a year at a given location. A higher number means sunnier or more favourable conditions. For example, a site with 1,500 kWh/kWp gets 50% more sun than one with 1,000 kWh/kWp. |

Grid-tied |
| A solar system connected to the main electricity network. Excess power can be fed back to the grid, and the building can draw from the grid when solar isn’t enough (e.g. at night). Most homes and businesses use this setup. |

Off-grid |
| A solar system that operates independently, with no connection to the main electricity network. Power is stored in batteries for use when the sun isn’t shining. Common in remote areas where grid connection is impractical or too expensive. |

Emission factor kgCO₂/kWh |
| How much carbon dioxide is released to produce one unit of electricity on a given power grid. Grids powered mostly by coal or gas have high factors; those using hydro or nuclear are much lower. This determines how much climate benefit a solar project delivers. |

Tonnes CO₂ tCO₂ |
| The standard unit for measuring greenhouse gas impact. One tonne is 1,000 kg. For reference, the average Canadian produces about 14 tonnes of CO₂ per year. One tonne avoided is roughly equivalent to not driving a car for 4–5 months. |
 |
CO₂ avoided |
| The amount of carbon dioxide that was not released into the atmosphere because solar energy replaced electricity that would have come from fossil fuels. Calculated by multiplying energy generated by the local emission factor. |
 |
Greenhouse gas GHG |
| Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. CO₂ (carbon dioxide) is the most common from burning fossil fuels. Solar power avoids producing these gases by generating electricity from sunlight instead. |
