“My experience as a SECT participant has been a deeply enriching and transformative journey that expanded both my professional skills and my understanding of the global energy transition. Through the fellowship, I gained practical experience working with energy data, engaging with sustainability discussions, and contributing to conversations on equitable and inclusive energy systems. Coming from a social work and community development background, the programme allowed me to explore the intersection between social justice and sustainable energy. It strengthened my understanding that energy transitions are not only technical processes but also social ones that must consider communities, livelihoods, and equity. The fellowship helped me see how youth can actively contribute to shaping sustainable futures through research, collaboration, and innovation. One of the most valuable aspects of Student Energy was being part of a global network of young leaders passionate about climate action and sustainability. Engaging with peers from diverse disciplines and countries broadened my perspective and encouraged interdisciplinary thinking when addressing complex environmental challenges. The experience has significantly influenced my career direction, motivating me to pursue opportunities that connect community development with renewable energy and sustainable economic growth. I leave the programme with greater confidence, strengthened analytical skills, and a clearer vision of how I want to contribute to a just energy transition, particularly within the South African context. Student Energy has not only equipped me with knowledge but has also reinforced my belief in the power of youth leadership in driving meaningful change.”
